Javi Leal Breaks the Bad Streak! Victory in Valencia P1 Marks the Beginning of a New Era
The young talent from El Puerto de Santa María celebrates his first victory of the season, leaving behind months of uncertainty and changes
Valencia, June 9, 2026.
The atmosphere in the Valencia P1 was charged with positive energy when Javi Leal, accompanied by his teammate Fran Guerrero, sealed his first victory of the season in Premier Padel. The duo beat the pair formed by Ruiz-Ortega in the opening round, a victory that for Leal, a player of such notable qualities, represents a true liberation after a period marked by complexity and waiting.
After six months of ups and downs, defeats and constant partner changes, Javi Leal radiates happiness. “I'm super happy,” confesses the 23-year-old player. “It is a day to be happy and enjoy this new stage with Fran.” The victory not only represents a respite on the scoreboard, but also a palpable emotional relief.
The feeling of lifting a great weight off your shoulders after more than 200 days without knowing victory is indescribable. “When the match was over, I felt a great release in my body,” Leal admits, reflecting the intensity of the accumulated pressure.
The Javi Leal that we know, the one who shouts and celebrates each point with fervor, has returned. But, who has been the fundamental pillar on the bench during this process? Leal does not hesitate to point out three key people: his coach 'Lopa', his physical trainer Ángel, and his representative Antonio. They have been unconditional support on this path.
The connection with Fran Guerrero, which promised to be idyllic in Rome after last year's semifinals, did not materialize as they expected. “I don't feel like our heads were heavy,” explains Leal about the defeat against Pol Hernández and Guille Collado. “We didn't find a way to hurt them and well, in the end the conditions in Rome equalized everything and they beat us.”
Leal's career has been marked by partner changes, from the initial project with Pablo Cardona to specific collaborations with players like Arceri or 'el loco' Torre. Can this losing streak be attributed to bad luck? “I don't know if I would say bad luck,” he reflects. Cardona's injury cut short the start of the season, and the lack of consistency in finding a stable partner has generated uncertainty. “Since the year for me becomes an uncertainty, I don't know who I was going to play a tournament with a week before it starts,” he laments.
Comparing this moment with the end of 2024, where he chained several tournaments without passing a round with Campagnolo, Leal recognizes that the current situation has been tougher. “I would tell you that yes, it has been the hardest sporting moment. Last year I came from doing very well, at the end of the more regular course and this year we started badly with everything.”
Fortunately, the calendar does not let up and events like Valencia and Valladolid present themselves as new opportunities. Leal's short-term objectives are clear: “I'm here now to enjoy myself. I don't have a goal of reaching the quarterfinals or semis, enjoying the process and the matches, because otherwise I get into a constant loop.”
Recent successes in FIP Platinum tournaments in France and FIP Silver in Portugal have been a balm for confidence. “It is true that there are many points at stake, but for me it helps to gain confidence,” he says. These tournaments have allowed him to “string together four or five games to get a little bit going”, something essential after losing streaks.
Registration for FIP tournaments generates debate. Leal shares his opinion: “In the end, there are many tournaments during the year, a FIP Silver for winning it gives you the equivalent of quarters or semis of a P2 and that is absurd, they have to regulate it.” He agrees with Paquito Navarro's vision, suggesting that the top 30 players should not participate to give a chance to those lower in the ranking.
The move to Dubai at the beginning of the year, beyond tax aspects, has had an important personal component. “I'm honest with you, I'm going back to Madrid,” he announces. “With these defeats I had a hard time and I needed to return to Spain with my entire team to help me. In the end, in Dubai I was alone.”
The ambitious goal of being number one in three or four years is still present, but the strategy has changed. “I don't focus on anyone, I listen to my team and follow what they tell me,” he declares, demonstrating maturity in his approach.
The 2026 World Cup is approaching, and although his ranking places him as fifth loser, Leal prefers to focus on the present. “It's exactly what I'm thinking about the least. How I am psychologically, with defeats and everything, I only think about playing, having a good time and whatever God wants.”
